Prolouge
Ryan Johnson looked up at the setting sun. The waves lapped at his feet, creating a tingling sensation in his toes. To his right was the ocean, and to his left was a row of beach houses. On the porches he could see tourists catching the last rays of the sun.
It was 6:00 P.M. and Ryan was telling himself he was still full of energy. The day had gone by quickly, the time had elapsed seemingly in seconds. He was tired, but he persisted to tell himself he was not. He did not want the day to end, heck, being in Costa Rica, nobody wanted the day to end. The sun seemed as if it was setting too quickly.
He was just about to turn back when he noticed a small lump in the water. The black lump was moving to shore, every-so often jerking. Ryan paused, staring. As the thing grew closer, he noticed it was a sort of lizard. It was green, with a long, slender body, and unusually, had two, thin crests on its head. “It must be hurt.” He thought. He took off his shoes and waded out to where it was resting. Working quickly, he grabbed it by the chest and pulled it to shore.
Ryan stood over it, examining it. It wasn’t an ordinary lizard. It was bigger, had arms instead of legs, and most abnormal, it had two thin crests on its head. It was panting barley breathing, and its skin was peeling, and now, streaks of blood were appearing. The spot where Ryan had grabbed it was open now, bleeding dark red. It stared at him, its eyes turning yellow, making the pitiful hooting noises, and stopped breathing.
Ryan stood there, shocked. He had seen the last moments of the creature’s life. He looked at his hands, red from the creature’s blood. Gagging, he walked to the water’s edge and cleaned his hands. Giving one last look at the creature, he turned and walked back down the endless stretch of sand…
